antigone essay Critical Essay #1. Antigone the Hero. In the play Antigone , I believe Sophocles purposely depicts Antigone as a hero. Antigone portrays extremely courageous qualities, and definitely fights for what she believes in. She does not accept what the king says just because he is the king or a person in authority. She does not agree with his law so she goes with her heart and her feelings and disobeys the king’s rule. It takes courage and theory essay, strength to stand up against authority for what you believe in. However, a strong person could not sit back and amish essay, watch something happen that they did not believe in. They would figure out the best way to stop it and then attempt to do so.
I guess it is literary theory essay just a matter of how important something is to virtues you. Literary Theory Essay? If something happens that has no or little significance to you, then most likely you will not worry about it or do anything to stop it. In the 451 ray case of Antigone she felt loyal to her brother and felt that she should protect his honor and give him the respect that he deserves even if the king did not agree with her. Literary Theory? Who is the king anyway? He is just a human being like you and I. Why should we listen to and obey anything he says. How did this person (king or person in aquinas virtues essay, authority) get the power they have? How do they handle the literary theory power they have? If the person actually earned their respect from hard work and personality characteristics, people are more likely to listen to him. Of Commercial Lease? On the other hand, if the person did not earn respect, and got in the position they are in simply because they were a predecessor of a previous king and were handed the power, people are less likely to follow the rule of that person. This makes a big difference in literary theory, the way that people will react to virtues a person in power. Literary Theory Essay? They must respect him or her and aquinas, believe that he or she is doing what is literary theory essay best for lease the people.
Political leaders are supposed to literary essay do what is right for the people as a whole. However, we all know that people make mistakes even if they are unintentional. Their mistakes may not even be realized until further down the road. Also, people can easily get greedy and look out for their own good before others. Although, in certain situations you may need to assignment of commercial lease listen to someone wiser than yourself, ultimately you are going to make the decision that you think is best. Therefore, just because someone in authority spits out commands does not mean that everything he or she says is right or just. Literary? You must question everything and if you feel strong enough against it, stand up and fight it.
In the 451 ray story, Antigone does just this. She is aware of the consequences and essay, sticks to what she feels she should do. Sophocles obviously portrayed Antigone and report sample, her sister Ismene as complete opposites. When Antigone runs to tell her sister of the situation Ismene will not help Antigone and tries to stop her from going through with her plans to bury her brother. In the literary background of sample Antigone they describe Creon’s edict as “unjust” (1424). This turns on a little light bulb that makes me think the author agrees that Creon's actions are wrong. The author goes on to say that “the gods approve of her action” (1424) and “she dies a victim of Creon’s hubris” (1424).
If she were not being portrayed as a heroine, the gods would not approve of her actions. Theory Essay? Instead they would think that she died for a petty cause and disobeyed a higher power. When they say she is a victim of assignment of commercial Creon’s hubris, they are essentially saying she was put to death because of Creon’s excessive pride not because she committed a crime that stemmed from her excessive pride. The only thing that may not support this argument is that Sophocles may not have written the background. Theory? Instead it may be interpretations written by amish outline, the author of the book. Ismene is literary nowhere near as strong as her sister. Scientific? It seems like she believes in what she is doing, but she fears Creon and the law.
In the play she says, “We are only women, we cannot fight with men”(1427). This quote shows Antigone’s strength. She is not afraid of men, death, or what anyone can or will do to her. She is loyal to her family and herself. Theory Essay? Ismene agrees that she is a loyal person, but says that she is amish essay “unwise”(1428).
Ismene also says, “I beg the dead to forgive me, I am helpless”(1427). If Ismene were so wise she would find an alternative way to honor her brother while staying out of trouble. Instead, she gutlessly sits back and literary theory, begs forgiveness when she could easily leave with her sister and do what she knows she should. In the cardinal virtues essay end Ismene goes to Creon and confesses to literary theory essay a crime she did not commit. If Sophocles were trying to cardinal essay highlight Ismene as a wiser person, he would have had her live on and make something of theory her life. Instead, she makes a complete fool of herself.
This was the most unwise decision I observed throughout the amish essay outline entire play. Theory? If she were a strong person she would have confessed to the crime and said that Antigone was innocent so that she could free her sister from the wrath of Creon. Ismene contradicted her entire argument in trying to persuade Antigone not to disobey Creon and the law by going against her own advice. Of Commercial Lease? The only way I could consider this admirable is if she realized she was wrong and truly wanted to honor her brother. Sometimes I believe it takes a stronger person to admit that they made a mistake and literary theory, attempt to make up for it. However, I do not think that is the case with Ismene.
I believe she was afraid to live alone with no family alive. By having Ismene come back and make a complete idiot of herself at the end of the play, Sophocles made Antigone stand out as a leader and assignment of commercial lease, a very courageous person, because Ismene follows her. Also following Antigone is literary theory essay Haimon, Creon’s son, who quarreled with his father and tried to aquinas cardinal virtues essay persuade him not to execute Antigone. Essay? Although, he did not follow Antigone because he was weak and afraid he followed her because he believed in her as a person. Haimon seems to have the most sense of everyone in thesis, the play and also is portrayed as a hero. He shows the ability to see both sides of the argument and reasons very well with his father.
He understands his father’s sternness, but at theory the same time makes good arguments for Antigone. His father says to Haimon, “Do you want me to make myself weak before the people? Or to break my sworn word”(1440). Haimon replies: Reason is God’s crowning gift to man, and you are right to warn me against losing mine. Of Commercial? I cannot say I hope that I shall never say! –that you have reasoned badly.
Yet there are other men who can reason, too; and their opinions might be helpful. You are not in theory essay, a position to know everything that people say or do or what they feel. . .Everyone will tell you only aquinas cardinal virtues essay, what you like to hear. But I, at any rate can listen; and I have heard them muttering and whispering in the dark about literary theory, this girl. Amish? They say no woman has ever, so unreasonably, died so shameful a death for a generous act. (1440-41) In my eyes, this is the best argument made throughout the entire play. Haimon acknowledges that Creon is the king, but realizes he is still human and can make mistakes. The people of the city agree that the literary girl should not be punished for such a generous act. However, the people will not tell him to his face how they actually feel.
They only say to him what he wants to hear. This is a great statement that should make Creon think about what is really best for the city and university of texas thesis, the people in theory essay, the city. Antigone is such a great and noble person that she has the entire city standing behind her. In the end of the story she is sentenced to death. She accepts her punishment with bravery. She knows in her heart that what she has done is chivalry thesis not wrong. She shows this by saying, “And yet, as men’s hearts know, I have done no wrong, I have not sinned before God”(1445). Haimon felt so strongly about Antigone and her reasoning for her actions that he took his own life. So Antigone overall was a strong person who touched the lives of other people so much that they were willing to die for her cause. Now that is a strong leader.
Sophocles had this in mind when he wrote the play and wanted to make Antigone the theory essay hero. I also find it intriguing that Sophocles made the main character a woman. No offense to women, but at this time in history I do not think that society thought of women as strong and powerful. I like that Sophocles did this anyway and of texas, broke barriers of what society thought. Overall, throughout the entire story Sophocles gave Antigone qualities that made her a strong person that many people including myself would look up to.

How Much Does A Top MBA Degree Cost? What’s the most expensive two-year MBA program you can take? You might be surprised to learn it isn’t Harvard or Stanford, or Wharton or Chicago, or Dartmouth or Yale. Instead, priciest MBA is being sold by literary, Columbia Business School. Columbia estimates that the cost of its two-year, full-time MBA program in New York is a whopping $168,307. Harvard Business School Dean Nitin Nohria said earlier this week that the cost of a Harvard MBA is amish, less than several other top rivals. “We are at literary theory essay, the middle of the pack when it comes to the top ten schools,” he said in a wide-ranging interview with The Financial Times. By the estimates of the total cost of the chivalry thesis, degree posted on theory essay, business school websites, he’s actually being somewhat conservative.
Harvard comes in as the seventh most expensive MBA program among the top 20 U.S. business schools. Not only is geology, Columbia number one, but the school Columbia also ends up on essay, another extreme end of this list of premium-priced degrees. Columbia reports the lowest percentage of MBA students who are receiving financial aid from the school–just 55%, well below the 81% at Duke, the 80% at Dartmouth, or the 75% at Stanford. The total cost of the Columbia program includes two years worth of aquinas, tuition, fees, books, and the estimated costs to live in New York City. But as often is the case, these numbers are often conservative. Yale’s School of Managment makes clear that its esimates assume a “modest lifestyle.” Cornell informs applicants on its website that its estimate of $11,250 a year for living expenses is literary theory essay, “based on the cost of sharing a moderately priced apartment” at a cost of $700 a month rent and amish essay outline putting aside $425 a month for food. Most MBAs at elite schools will find it hard to essay live on that budget, especially in New York, Boston, Chicago, or San Francisco.
Indeed, perhaps to make these estimates more believable to applicants, Cornell goes out of university of texas geology, its way to literary theory essay note, “It is amish essay, much easier to literary live like a student when you are a student than to live like a student when you are earning $90,000 annually. If you were to thesis reduce your student loans from theory, $50,000 to $40,000 you would save approximately $121 per month in report student loan payments.” TOTAL COST ESTIMATES ARE VERY CONSERVATIVE. In almost all cases, these “total cost” numbers–taken from the school’s websites–are very conservative estimates. Wharton’s $168,000 pricetag, for example, fails to include the cost of its Global Immersion Program, which ranges from $5,800 to literary theory $7,800, or the inevitable cost to join clubs, attend conferences and “parties,” which Wharton estimates at $860 a year. Those two omissions alone add 6% to the total cost estimate of an MBA degree. Stanford’s estimate of the total cost of its MBA degree doesn’t include a required “global study tour” which costs about $4,000. In most cases, you can expect the of texas geology thesis, “total cost estimate” to be 10% to literary theory 20% higher, given your lifestyle preferences and desire to take full advantage of the MBA experience. The costs of amish essay, non-U.S. MBA programs can vary widely, especially because in Europe one-year programs are especially popular. London Business School’s 21-month MBA program looks like a bargain if you believe the estimate: $134,152, with $77,854 of that going to theory essay pay tuition.

The least expensive program is at the University of amish, Texas at Austin.
At a total cost of $127,144–more than $40,000 less than a Columbia MBA–it looks like a true bargain for literary essay a top degree. Then, add in the fact that the school is helping 75% of its MBAs with financial aid–versus Columbia’s 55%–and it seems as if it is a very smart investment, indeed. The most expensive public university in chivalry thesis the MBA game is surprisingly UCLA. Higher ranked B-schools at literary essay, Berkeley, Michigan and Virginia are less expensive in total costs than the Anderson school in Los Angeles–largely because of the highest cost of living in L.A. than Berkeley, Ann Arbor, or Charlottesville. The most generous school in terms of financial aid? MIT Sloan. Thesis Statement Fahrenheit Bradbury? The school puts together the largest average financial aid packages of the literary, top schools: $130,418. That’s more than $15,000 more than Columbia and more than twice the size of Berkeley’s $67,052 (the lowest amount reported by any of our top 20 schools). Be aware, however, that financial aid is a rather vague phrase to thesis statement bradbury describe a package of financial help. You don’t know how much of this money is merely a loan or a scholarship or fellowship.
HARVARD GIVING STUDENTS MORE THAN $20 MILLION A YEAR IN FELLOWSHIPS. Such fellowships–typically used to lure exceptional students or to help students on essay, the basis of financial need–can significantly lower the price tag of an MBA. Harvard effectively discounts the sticker price of its MBA by chivalry thesis, paying out literary essay some $22 million a year in fellowship money. HBS says that nearly half of amish essay outline, every MBA class receives an literary theory essay average of some $25,000 per year in “need-based” HBS Fellowships that are granted only on the basis of financial need and not academic merit. The school makes these awards based on an analysis of an applicant’s income for the prior three years as well as the applicant’s assets. So, if you are considering returning to Asia where the fahrenheit 451 ray, most of the growth is right now, your US MBA is not worth much. Literary? In fact any MBA is not worth much. And why should it? More and more students in Asia are becoming smarter and doing the MBA part time. Remember Satyan Nadella did his MBA part time. The advantage of part time MBA, is you prove you can multi task more efficiently than full time guys. My solution to those who are super desperate to be on the MBA bandwagon: 1) Do it part time 2) If you don’t land a top 10 US program , do an ultra cheap one (don’t settle for Europe MBAs or anything else)

Go part-time to a school like UC Berkeley and literary theory MAKE money during your years there as the company pays and you continue to earn. You are an idiot. Before seeking an MBA, learn to write in proper English. If you cannot compete with the chivalry thesis, Indians, don’t blame them for your woes. I am an Indian and I work for a big tech company. By the way, my pay is. 150,000/annum without an MBA (that too with 7 years of experience and without an theory MBA). Although I agree with some of your points and disagree with others, I want to make a comment about your statement “MBAs got rich off the Internet” for amish essay those reading the comment thread.
The majority of people who work as Internet marketers or make money online know an MBA has very very little to do with it. In my opinion, as well as fellow entrepreneurs and investors, it is literary essay, a waste of money and time. So if you want to appease mommy and daddy or “corporate America” go get that MBA baby. If you want to make money and chivalry thesis learn how to navigate the Internet efficiently, get your hands dirty. impossible. it is about 30k top per literary theory essay year. John, I am aware of the amish outline, general requirement for “real world” occupational experience prior to literary theory entering most, if not all, business schools.
I was hoping that he could leave after graduation and “the NCAA eligibility clock” would stop until he returned. As Cobra pointed out, however, it apparently starts running on scientific report, day one and doesn’t stop until your five year window is closed. I was not aware of that. I know it seems like desperate measures but when looking at a pre-aid bill of. 150k for two years of literary, graduate school – well, I’m going to pull out all the stops! Something else to add: NCAA eligibility begins on the first day of class. You have five years to use four years of eligibility. So under your plan, your son would only thesis, have 3 years of eligibility left if he transferred to Harvard if he didn’t use any up at that Texas school.
Something else to consider – elite Ivy league schools (I know Princeton for sure) do a great job of providing need-based aid. Theory? The worst thing is have him apply and university thesis see what type of aid is literary, offered. Outline? Don’t rule it out from the theory, get go because you think it’s too expensive. Harvard Business School tends not to accept any candidates direct from their undergraduate experience. They pretty much require at chivalry thesis, least two years of work experience. If your son can get into Harvard University as an literary theory undergrad based on its football skills, he should go for it. Have him take out loans. I really believe a Harvard education is a priceless opportunity.
It’s worth the hardship of having to take out a big loan. Here’s a curveball for you – my son is a standout football player and a great student. In order to save money I have considered having him attend a local university (we’re in Texas) for his first two years and then transfer into Harvard. I’m going to make an assumption here, that being Harvard would very much want him to aquinas cardinal essay play football for them and essay as such would help financially secure his attendance (no athletic “scholarships”, I know). Having four years of NCAA eligibility is it conceivable that Harvard would aid him throughout his junior/senior years and then through the MBA program as long as he continued to play football? Is this possible? It varies from thesis, program to program.
Many schools will make an theory essay offer of financial aid along with the invite to enroll in a program. In any case, it’s often hard to do a head-to-head comparison because of the different ways that schools handle this. Good luck. If trying to decide between offers, is statement fahrenheit, there any way to compare aid packages available? So far it’s my understanding that you have to accept a place in a program before you can apply for financial aid. Literary Theory Essay? Is that right or am I missing something? I agree with the comment by “how about schools with sane tuition and great placements??” There should be some information about affordable yet good programs.
Brigham Young University as he points out, is a good example. Great info in this site anyway. Many of the thesis statement fahrenheit 451 ray bradbury, business schools offer an MBA in essay a single year and that helps to save considerable money. And if you have any interest in Asia, there are now quite a few very good schools in Asia. Assignment Lease? Check out our ranking of the best non-U.S. schools.
Meantime, I would also look up The Consortium. See our story on The Consortium: Inside the $20 Million MBA Draft. I believe that as a Native American you qualify for that program which is the largest single pot of theory, MBA scholarship money available, outside of what individual schools are offering. Good luck. My wife and I live on bradbury, her salary ($79K) while I’m finishing up my second undergrad. We are socking away $2,000-$2,200/month. If you live very sparely, and choose carefully, it can be done. Our goal is to literary theory have no debt and of texas geology thesis $75K in the bank when I graduate in 2013. That will carry us far when I finally go to literary MBA/grad school – if I do. This discussion has given me great pause.
Can anyone recommend any MBA schools in English-speaking non-U.S. Statement Fahrenheit 451 Ray Bradbury? countries that are an excellent value? Also, can anyone recommend any schools that have scholarships/fellowships/programs aimed at Native American students? I agree with Sanjay. Essay? Bruce – it is aquinas virtues essay, nearly impossible to pay off the tuition in 3 yrs. Assuming you get a job (having an MBA does not guarantee employment), it’ll take 8-10 yrs of diligent, concentrated effort to pay it off. I have just discussed this very issue with a MIT alum who took 8 years at $1000 a month to pay it off. She has the “brand” and a handsome salary.
Food for literary theory thought. I am a prospective MBA student and I am still trying to statement fahrenheit 451 ray bradbury recover from the fees for the GMAT and literary the applications. Never mind the tuition. The day of reckoning has to be coming. All MBAs I speak to say the same thing, get a degree from amish essay, a top five, maybe ten, school. I know what it means. What does it mean to you?! There are some peculiar and cynical views of the MBA on this page. The MBA’s value is literary essay, not just in the education. I get the argument that learning by actually experiencing the field is best. Chivalry Thesis? Elite MBA’s offer experiental coursework, which is the major difference between the elite and average MBA programs.
Additionally, elite MBA’s offer you the literary, opportunity to 451 ray learn from classmates that have been in the fields you want to pursue. Say you want to essay be an IB, well, a top MBA certianly has a number of them in cardinal essay your classes. Finally, regardless of the literary theory, price, an MBA from an statement fahrenheit elite school is simply something I wanted to experience. Literary Theory Essay? If I had a bucket list, a elite academic experience would be on it. I would follow through with an elite MBA regardless of whether or not I was offered my dream job because the MBA itself is my dream education. Do not kid yourself into thinking an cardinal virtues MBA from a run of the theory, mill program offers the same opportunities or fulfillment. A top 25 MBA is one of the most valuable degrees you can have and cardinal it costs less than the top 50 JD, which is far more mind numbing and tedious.
the mba would hold less value if people actually took business courses in college or used their degree in literary essay their career fields. i didn’t get a master’s for two reasons: 1 i was lazy and 2 i don’t need it in my job. that’s not to say that the mba holds no value but for cardinal virtues a lot of people who graduated with a ba in humanities and theory figured out that the can’t get a good paying job with their degree, they will pay for an edge to get a better job. These are fees for all applicants and students. Of Texas Geology Thesis? I don’t believe international students are charged extra admission fees. Are these fees for American students only? Do the literary theory essay, American universities charge extra admission fees for international students? I don’t think it is correct to mix together scholarships and loans and on that ground to call MIT the most geneous school! Quite in thesis contrary, it offers virtually no scholarships and literary essay only sporadic prof assistant opportunities. With that being the truth in top 15 to 20 schools of the world. The demand is still incredible. The only way to reduce it is by increasing the tuition cost to 3 times than what it is now!
Because nothing is discouraging young folks to pursue this degree. The schools are very clever in essay avoiding a dramatic increase in tuition( it is literary essay, quite high already) by fahrenheit, increasing their intake and have tossed the literary theory essay, student and faculty ratio( which is supposed to lease be 1:5 or 1:10 max when you are paying through the nose!). Now it is more like 1:100 or 1:350 or 1:850( some universities do have this kind of essay, rooms!). I wonder can you really learn well not withstanding high reputation of schools with this kind of scenario. Can a student really concentrate on studies with burden of debt and bad economy and bleak future hovering around their head? I guess not!
The applications suggest otherwise. It suggests there is a huge demand for essay outline MBA’s in the world. Every top school is flooded with so many applications for few seats! My theory and concern could be misplaced or even horribly wrong! I know no better than the guy who is doing it or the guy who wants to do it or the literary theory essay, guy who dislikes doing it! So the tuition can only go up and never down for long time to aquinas come! This is especially true for the american and some occidental countries where they dread doing tech work! They will have to compete with chinese and indians for low wages( hey indians will do it for free for green card. chinese have deeper foundation and they some how marry their own and stay put like back in the 90’s, but these days they can go back to HK or shangai and make par pay packages! So tech is left to indians, who will do the same work for 50k that stanford grad demands 150k! And not to mention the drudgery of the work( there is no signing, performance, overtime blah blah here! Stock options I don’t know, they will come when they come!).
Hence, the bright guys are left with no options to go MBA schools which have less competition from indians and theory essay chinese due to high costs! And also in turn promise big salaries! So the rush for MBA will only rise further in geology usa, as all the tech work is basically left to indians these days! If you go and literary theory visit all the aquinas virtues, big companies with the exception of apple, you will wonder am I in usa or what? confirms my observation! it is really shocking. Especially for americans who are already in debt from their undergraduate days and on top of it if they pursue this degree it will basically like to literary theory essay double or treble their debt.
On top of all this they will have to support themselves(rent, house, car, health). So either you are generating debt or paying debt for the majority of your adult life! seems like no fun at all! I don’t care you do it from harvard or haven! So who is happy here with this trap? a) when you have at fahrenheit, the average 15%acceptance rate at the top 15 schools, the tuition costs are not gonna come down, in-fact they are likely to go up. The day is not far away when one of these top schools will say you need 250k budget for the MBA(STAN HAS PUSHED IT TO 165-175K RANGE ALREADY). Also wharton will have their executive program charging close to 250-300k and others will follow soon!
b) Now who are these folks competing hand over fist for literary theory these seats? Most of them are in their youth( the late 20’s to early 30’s folks). Oops.. I passed 35 couple of years ago! They are lured by the big money with all these salary, signing bonus, coming to office bonus, sihtting in office bonus, transport bonus and what not bonus and the lure of university thesis, power and big money of wall street. These folks are drawn it to like a magnet and are determined to get there at all cost!
So the cost of these high profile MBA continue to spin out of control! c) It is totally unclear, how many business jobs out literary essay there need mba( any expert made any survey from all the job boards). If you just take in to account 400 of amish essay, listed accredited schools and calculate at literary, the average of amish essay outline, 150 candidates( half of them graduate every year=75) that is mind boggling 400*75 graduates alone seeking employment every year. If you put together all schools it is close to 200k graduates(domestic/inter) coming out of essay, college every year! So the market should have around 15-20 bil cap to pay the fresh legs! That means 80-100 dollar per chivalry thesis annum from literary theory, every citizen in usa for the new MBAS! One one hand it seems quite plausible for a supermarket like usa. On the other hand the number looks insanely hight as we see people getting laid at the rate of thesis statement fahrenheit 451 ray, half mil per theory month, since the crash! And I do not see 200k business job opening from any job site period.
It is a paradox indeed! Dang, bruh. I hope I didn’t hit a nerve. You specifically said 500-1000 students in one classroom. I questioned this because it didn’t make sense. HBS is a huge school and doesn’t even have 1000 seats for essay a given class. Niether does Wharton. Stanford has like 350 or something small like that. You pulled the number out of theory essay, your butt. That was my issue with that.
I think it’s very possible for persons to pay off their debt in 2-3 years or they can drag it out for 7-8years like old boy did. Whatever. My point is that it can happen. You said that it can’t. Is quants and poets all about elite schools? Who is better? Who charges more?Which schools incurs you with more debt? which top school has better placement…… Hello. How about schools that are offering top quality education second to none at affordable costs? And have the placements are on par with these elite schools? Or something like that doesn’t exist in MBA’S from the Americas? Right now only thesis fahrenheit, IIM figures in the list( well they are in india where tuition is low I get it!).
One such university, I came across is Brigham young in god forsaken land of UTAH( US ranked 32!) and placements seem cool! And you do not have to declare bankruptcy to get this god damn MBBBBBBBBBAAAAAAAA! May be nebraska, alaska and missouri have something to avoid this usury and the misery? you don’t really need to have an mba to figure this out! I hold master degree from usa and literary no how the system works( meaning I have been in debt and also know, how much time it takes to right it off! Speaking of which it jacked up to thesis statement fahrenheit 451 ray bradbury average debt of essay, harvard mba’s 75k-100k, thanks to amish essay recession period of 2000 to 2004, before the wheels started to change but the party dint last! Having leaved the first decade of 2000’s in debt, I lived the second decade prosperous with no debt, whatsoever! So I have been in similar situation and knowledgeable to air my thoughts!
Oh long time ago, I also dint take up MBA! No problem getting seats for literary theory me in majority of the schools!). 1–regarding class room size, what I said is quite true. If you are thinking that. the mba class room will have student to statement faculty ratio of literary, 1:15 or even 1:10( which is what i am looking for intimate teaching experience, so that the teacher has full focus on a small team to dissect and bisect the contents) that is not gonna happen( I will quote few links from many sites). Most of the these so called top schools have no classroom but auditorium kind of set up for common courses( there is statement fahrenheit bradbury, no way they are going to literary theory essay have 50 classrooms teaching core first year class in harvard/stand/whar, when they have 2000 to 1000 students). So basically in this kind of chivalry thesis, set up, you are only literary theory essay, receiving knowledge and will not have time to decipher it completely due to lack of time in class of these sizes. Chivalry Thesis? Now having paid this kind of exorbitant fees, I will have problem with it. There is no way you will master the subject! 2–It is not just elite schools, the fee is insanely high in most of the top schools( close to top 100) are averaging in 100k. Doesn’t matter whether the school is public or private.
Now public schools who are run by govt funds charging this amount is preposterous indeed, when they are not charging similar amount for other top quality masters degrees from their own( university of literary, california Berkley/Davis,Irvine to name a few!). Report Sample? That means, without going through this kind of debt there is no way, you are going to get top MBA. And the private schools are big culprits too, they get donation from theory essay, people who are doing charities( these people are righting of taxes are they are truly benevolent?) And still the prices are high. Hence, I call it a GAME to essay make money right from the get go. You are pursuing this MBA for profit. Literary Theory Essay? It starts with a huge debt. Thesis Statement Fahrenheit 451 Ray Bradbury? And having been in debt you are in mood to settle down for normal salaries). On its own MBA is like any other quality degree( the cost is not justifying the means!). The cost, the ranking and what kind of essay, money you are getting, when you come out… looks like a rigged game from the teachers to corporates! Why are schools not reducing the cost of thesis 451 ray bradbury, tuition in tough times ( just like the theory, employees salaries are cut during tough times?
Does anyone bother to question that? On the contrary the rates are increasing towards north!) 3- There is chivalry thesis, no way you will be able to pay off 100-200k debt in 2 to 3 years, that too in this economy by any stretch of theory, imagination. If you want to write off 100k debt in sample 3 years, you will have to make monthly payment of around 3k. Not to essay mention other debts, you will incur other living expenses(rent/mort,health,car and what not to keep your prestige). And you won’t be getting stellar salary to that extent to pay it off! The guy who took 80k to graduate took nearly 7 to 8 years to pay it off, supports my observation. 4– If you are saying that you are doing MBA mostly for a profit, from what I could sense from aquinas essay, your reply than you are not getting the literary theory, full picture.
5– I am not saying MBA should be offered free for all even, from elite schools. What I am saying is it should be affordable just like other degrees both from scientific report, public and private schools). Literary Theory? And not based on university geology, reputation, ranking and cost. I don’t mind people getting block buster salaries coming out of mba! It is all between how employer values the theory essay, employee and how you perform) 6- Well, it looks like even MBA degrees are outsourced. For example an article here or on FT was that an university of texas thesis mba aspirant got his mba from oxford rather than harvard due to costs( it is one year there and can get it done for 65k! A friend of mine went to literary essay singapore to get his mba rather than berkley.
And now folks are moving to eastern europe/germany/some swiss universities and even india to scale back the costs associated with american elite and european schools). In a way it is sad, I like american education system having been there and done that and what it takes to get it done ( I graduated from not the elite school but with elite teachers. And I could demand 6 fig in toughest times based on how i learnt and used it rather than were i went to and how much I spent in getting it done!). So put it simply this enormous baggage is turning away deserved candidates to other pastures and lease who is losing in these tough times? And there is no relief in sight!
z) hey by the way getting phd seat is not that hard( top schools have more phds in their curriculum than masters! Har/cmu/berk/stan… The students are hiding in phd programs! Thanks for reading. I am not all 100% right! But you can tell I have agendas! @The tuition fees are preposterous to literary say the least!, I respectfully disagree with the virtues, general point that you made. The ROI on literary theory, an MBA, even from an non-elite school, is chivalry thesis, generally pretty high. Also, for a lot of MBA’s the payback period (the time it takes the degree to pay for itself) is 2-3 years after graduation. So that’s roughly 4-5years from the time the essay, person matriculates. A phd candidate is really lucky if they can get the degree after 5 years and if they were one of the fortunate ones to not have to pay then that’s great but now they’re 30 before they have put anything toward retirement.
I do agree that tuition is ridiculous but you assume that every MBA pays sticker when really some get scholarships of varying sizes. “Can anybody tell me what is the fahrenheit 451 ray, point in literary theory essay sitting in a class room with 500 to 1000 people in an amphitheatre? There is no room for catechism! Can you really learn anything at all? Is this enormous tuition fee justified?” What in the world are you talking about? What business school does this?
Find one. “the aero-plane was not invented by MBA’s hello. Nor the rocket or the internet!” Yes, but many MBA’s got rich off of the internet and aquinas cardinal “aero-plane.” “I have more respect for people who built the brooklyn bridge, the transatlantic railway, the golden gate bridge who are the real icons of literary theory, america, which made the report, country to look up to in the eyes of the world. That’s great. I have more respect for the people who made a profit for those things. Everyone’s different. “Right now these preposterous cost MBA’S are only fit for wall street! And not for people who want to master business and essay its administration!” How do you know whether either of these two statements are true if you don’t have an MBA? The hype and hoopla around MBA degrees is chivalry thesis, ridiculous! This number game is essay, started right at the top( i am bigger and better than others).
Do we hear other degrees doing that? MBA is not the biggest ticket in town! Come to think of it. Lease? Software degree is the biggest dog! The starting salaries are on par with mba salaries if you take in to account the literary, low tution cost compared to MBA. And it doesn’t have to be top 10! Not just software, any engineering degree, the starting salary for amish outline a phd grad is 6 figures; come from any school! And most of the phd degrees are free and literary theory if you start right on assignment of commercial, time at 22 you will be ready and ruling the literary theory essay, world by thesis statement fahrenheit 451 ray, 27 -28 with no debt! An MBA degree on its own is nice to have but it is literary, not the “IT” ticket considering the aquinas cardinal virtues essay, debt disclaimer that comes with it!
The tuition fee is totally unjustified when the same schools have master and phd degrees which don’t even costs 1/4 of MBA fee! And MBA degree doesn’t have investment associated like engineering programs, which need labs and hence, more investment compared to MBA, which can be done in one room, come to think of it rather than 10 plus buidlings! The lap top is a joke! this paradox looks inexplicable to me and literary theory essay no amount of convincing can mitigate doubts of we engineers! Can anybody tell me what is the point in sitting in a class room with 500 to 1000 people in an amphitheatre? There is no room for catechism! Can you really learn anything at all?
Is this enormous tuition fee justified? If I paid 6 figure tuition, I demand one to scientific report sample one professor for each and every subject! If they can assure that and the salary must be minimum half million dollars straight of the bat than hell yeah, I would pay this money to get it done! Not when you are trapped in a debt prison during the prime of your life! I smell a (rat/racket/junta).
There has been no effort by any of these top dogs to reduce the theory, tuition fees, they continue to be insane even in this decade of terrible economy! I will take an scientific sample engineering degree any day than MBA. the aero-plane was not invented by literary essay, MBA’s hello. Nor the rocket or the internet! The wall street crisis that happens time and again, definitely caused by some of these MBA folks for sure! It looks like MBA is only for the rich and famous who have some head to chivalry thesis do well in GMAT and throw money around! I have more respect for people who built the literary theory essay, brooklyn bridge, the transatlantic railway, the golden gate bridge who are the real icons of america, which made the country to look up to in the eyes of the cardinal, world. Right now these preposterous cost MBA’S are only fit for wall street! And not for people who want to master business and its administration! The MBA is theory, a corporate cahoot!
Can some body provide info on AID/LOAN/SCHOLARSHIPS facilities available for of texas thesis International Students. Literary Theory Essay? I am planning to take admission in one of US top business schools but I can arrange 75% of total cost. So needs financing for the rest. For a Belgian who paid a total of 500 euros for his Master studies at one of the finest Universities on the European continent, these numbers remain mind-boggling… I sometimes really wonder why it is assignment of commercial lease, necessary to literary pay these huge amounts of money to virtues essay receive a good education. Universities used to literary be a place where scholars and chivalry thesis student gathered, seeking and sharing knowledge which ultimately contributed to society as a whole. MBA schools however, seem to attract people trying to essay make a quick buck, jump on the corporate ladder or perhaps, I must admit, seek to launch their own company or find a new purpose in life. The friendships and networks you find at amish essay outline, B-schools are priceless, so is this knowledge you gain from excellent professors and a well-researched and practical curriculum. But is literary, it really necessary to set the financial bar this high in order to receive these things?
Having said that, I’m also thinking of obtaining an MBA degree one day, and assignment finding the right balance between tuition and quality is literary essay, of the utmost importance. So thank you very much for amish essay this site, keep up the amazing work! This is why it is nice to be married #128578; My wife’s salary will go a long way to offsetting the future debts of B School. My brother got his JD from a top 50 school and could only afford to make interest payments for the first year and half. He loves what he does and just got a 20% raise but after 3 years of essay, work still has around $175k in debt. Granted, his school was in a prime party spot and law school can be like an extension of undergrad. I also second what Tarik asked about what these numbers represent — because if they suggest that I’d have to chivalry thesis finance an extra $70k out of pocket to go to literary theory essay say, Tuck, even after scholarship/fellowship aid and loans are factored in, that’s an of commercial lease application that doesn’t need to happen. Yale, too.
O_O. This article leaves me with my hands on my knees wheezing for air. Costs are out of literary, control. It looks like the Columbia students who did receive aid were given an amount in line with the other top schools. As for the 55% figure itself, I’m not sure. It’s Columbia, so maybe Daddy is covering the balance for our future financial leaders. #128578; so help me undestand.. the difference betweeen the total cost and the loan amount is provided from the university geology thesis, students’ pockets??
so for example in literary theory essay the case of Columbia, about geology $53k is literary, covered from the student’s personal savings? The vast majority of Booth students live downtown in the Loop area, as opposed to Hyde Park (we have another campus on the Mag Mile for part-time students, but full-timers use it as their unofficial library and chivalry thesis group meeting spot). Rents in theory essay the Loop are significantly higher than in Evanston, and chivalry thesis the social life revolves mostly around events downtown and in Lincoln Park, as opposed to the (semi)-college prices you find in Evanston. I’m a current 2nd-year Booth student. In the table, Kellogg’s tuition is actually higher than Booth’s, yet the overall estimated cost at Chicago is quite a bit higher than Northwestern. I would imagine the cost of literary, living for both schools to be fairly similar…if anything Evanston is scientific report, a more expensive neighborhood than Hyde Park. What’s the reason for literary essay the discrepancy?
Does Chicago charge additional “fees”? Excellent article. Chivalry Thesis? Thank you for pointing out that many times the school’s estimates in the cost of living area are very low (I find even “modest” to be misleading). After finishing my undergraduate degree (which I earned as a non-traditional student), I looked at both MBA programs and Law Schools. Both left me utterly speechless in regards to theory the tuition that they were charging vs. the cost of other graduate school programs.
I made the choice to pursue an MBA at a non top-tier (but still AACSB accredited) program. The amount I am paying is less than 1/10th the price of of commercial lease, Columbia. It is literary, up for debate if a “name brand” MBA is worth 10 times the amish, value of my state school MBA. I feel that higher education, especially graduate school, can be a tough buy to make from a consumer perspective. Essay? It is hard to determine if you are getting what you pay for. Aquinas Cardinal Virtues? I think that increased transparency and more unbiased, third-party reviews (in addition to literary theory essay rankings) could help countless MBA prospects make the decision as to where they should spend their money. Very good consolidated information. Does anyone know anything about Pre MBA internships? UT may give you a good degree for chivalry thesis less money but it pales in comparison (prestige/rep) to literary essay most other schools on the list sans Michigan, UNC and UCLA.
If you want to work in Texas then UT is great because Texas firms think it is equal to Harvard and better than Duke and Emory. If you leave Texas and the south…good luck. That’s certainly true. The market doesn’t seem to discriminate against one year MBAs but instead rewards them with the same starting salaries. As the table shows, the big winners were all schools with one year degrees. That is where the beauty of a one year program comes to scene. #128578; It’s the amount of financial aid–loans and scholarship money combined–arranged for each student by the school. What dose the column “Amount of Aid” mean? I heard that Harvard (and Wharton somewhat) masks their costs through a lower tuition but much higher “fees” than many others?

Act 1 of #8221;Macbeth#8221; by Shakespeare Essay Sample. William Shakespeare, an English playwright, often started his plays with powerful scenes and mood-setting action. Act 1 of #8216;Macbeth#8217; is no exception to essay, the traditional important and exciting Shakespearean introductions. Shakespeare wrote #8216;Macbeth#8217; as a tribute to King James, the new monarch of England at the time. Statement Fahrenheit 451 Ray? This was for many reasons; one reason was when Shakespeare wrote the play, he included several elements that would have appealed to the king: witchcraft and ancestry. Literary Theory? King James was particularly interested in witchcraft and this may have inspired Shakespeare to of commercial lease, include witchcraft as such a major part to evil in the play. The character of Banquo was the ancestor of King James; this appears in Act IV when the witches show the literary essay, apparitions of the 8 kings descending from Banquo. The play as a whole would be described as a tragedy because it contains death, murder, immorality and cardinal virtues, the consistent battle against good and evil; which are main elements of a Shakespearean tragedy. Act 1 of Macbeth presents and demonstrates a world full of literary, deception. The uncertainty and inconsistency in of commercial the characters keep interest level up and theory, the audience on the edge of their seats.
The audience is forced to think about the concept of good and cardinal virtues essay, evil. This mental involvement in the play draws a lot of interest to literary essay, the play and thoroughly prepares them for chivalry thesis, the evil that is theory essay about to follow. However, there are also other genres like horror, suspense and drama that come later on during the play. Chivalry Thesis? Act 1 displays the deceptive environment in which Macbeth lives (which is a major theme in the play), depicting the characters#8217; personalities and motives, and finally portraying the constant struggle between good and literary theory essay, evil. Act 1 prepares the audience for report sample, the evil that will follow through the essay, setting of the scenes, the characters, language and many other techniques. It is true to a great extent that the audience is unaware of report, exactly what events are to follow after Act 1, but they are definitely prepared for something evil to occur, thus keeping them on tenterhooks. Literary Essay? An extremely powerful weapon that Shakespeare utilises in statement Act 1 to introduce evil is by beginning the play with the witches.
As soon as the witches enter the act, the audience is made aware of the play#8217;s theme as witches were associated with evil and literary theory, cast as being wicked during the Elizabethan times. They uphold their evil status throughout the act although their power is not fully demonstrated until the prophecies come true. The witches symbolise all that is evil, playing a significant role in cardinal virtues essay Macbeth#8217;s downfall, as it is them who trigger his ambition to theory essay, become King. Amish Essay? They exploit him as a pawn because they are mischievous characters who cause chaos. They influence Macbeth by telling him what he wishes to theory, hear, that he shall be Thane of Cawdor and soon the King. Nevertheless, they do not speak more than a sentence at once and vanish without revealing too much; this may be to scientific report, increase his anticipation and make him more curious. The audience is in a similar situation to Macbeth at this point, as they are unsure as to what the witches mean, thus building suspense and curiosity. In addition to this curiosity and suspense, Shakespeare makes use of powerful language and sets the scene accordingly whilst dealing with the witches. There is always thunder (and sometimes lighting) before the witches enter a scene in Act 1. This sets a dark mood, making them appear sinister and other-worldly, bringing upon gloom as they enter, and portraying an element of pathetic fallacy.
What the witches say is also portrayed to be evil. Theory? For example, they seem to take pleasure in chivalry thesis #8220;Killing swine#8221; and say #8220;I#8217;ll drain him dry as hay#8221; to show that they are immoral. During the Elizabethan era, people blamed witches to be capable of causing many unexplained events such as- unexplained deaths or illnesses, crop failures, plagues etc. They had many ideas of witches that said they would carry familiars, brew potions in a cauldron and travel in broomsticks. Shakespeare tries to capture and portray this idea through the play though he does not reveal all the powers the witches may have.
However we see them performing spells and literary, conversing with apparitions, Banquo states that they #8220;look not like th#8217;inhabitants o#8217;th#8217;earth#8221;. This tells us that they have supernatural powers that humans do not possess, but there may be limitations. Instead of carrying out the deeds themselves they lure Macbeth into fahrenheit 451 ray doing their will; This may either mean that they do not want to get their #8216;hands dirty#8217;, i.e. they would rather have Macbeth carrying out their task or that their powers are limited which averts them from completing their goal themselves. Literary Theory Essay? Nevertheless, the witches are highly influential characters that change the course of the 451 ray, play, symbolising strong forces of evil. Lady Macbeth is theory a very interesting and influential character that we cannot ignore, as she plays a vital role in altering the course of the thesis, play. She is portrayed as a very well mannered and well groomed wife initially. Macbeth and literary essay, his wife have a very loving relationship in which they have great influence on chivalry thesis, one and other. In the theory essay, earlier acts of the play we can see that Lady Macbeth#8217;s words mean a lot to her husband, giving the impression that she is definitely the dominant figure in aquinas the relationship.
Macbeth shows great compassion and respect towards, addressing her as #8220;dearest partner of literary theory essay, greatness#8221; (Act 1 scene 5) in his letter. Lady Macbeth is an influence on her husband in 451 ray many different ways, for many different reasons, as explained below. We realise that Lady Macbeth#8217;s characteristics are similar to the witches in many ways. Theory? Like the witches she seems to influence Macbeth with evil just as strongly, if not more. She is not hesitant to openly refer to aquinas virtues, being selfless and theory, cruel #8220;And fill me from the aquinas cardinal essay, crown to the toe topfull/ Of direst cruelty#8221; (lines 40-41, scene 5) almost like the witches. Also, she and the witches use the metaphoric powers of language to call upon spirits that in theory turn will influence Macbeth in different ways. Lady Macbeth states: #8220;come, you spirits that tend on mortal thoughts,#8221; (lines 38-39 scenes 5). It is of texas geology as if Lady Macbeth is a witch herself as she refers to spirits, making her seem almost inhuman. At this point, we can link the witches and Lady Macbeth, thus deducing that she acts as a similar force of evil. Later on, as she opens her husband#8217;s letter she immediately begins to literary, scheme and plot, showing her true evil ambition.
We are immediately made aware that she wants Macbeth to become King, so they can be at of commercial, a higher status, #8220;and shalt be/ What thou art promised ;#8221;( lines 13-14, scene 5). She is unsure as to whether Macbeth is too kind and literary theory essay, without the assignment of commercial lease, evil that needs to merge with his already prominent ambition. As said in her soliloquy, #8216;I fear…is too full#8217;o the milk of essay, human kindness, to catch the nearest way#8217;. (Lines 15-16, scene 5). For this reason, she influences him greatly into the prospect of lease, murdering the king, #8220;That I may pour my spirits in thine ear#8221; (line 24, scene5) The thought of Macbeth becoming king pushes her and literary, causes her to act outrageously, adding greatly to evil as a theme. Nonetheless, when King Duncan comes to amish essay, the Macbeth castle, she seems as though she is happy and delighted to see the theory, king saying, #8220;All our service/ In every point twice done and then done double/#8221; (lines14-15 scene6). Lady Macbeth portrays hypocritical traits through her behaviour, actions and of commercial lease, speech. The audience is introduced to the interesting idea that a wife or Lady could force her will upon a supposedly strong minded husband (In Elizabethan times, women were portrayed to essay, be weaker than men as the men were the workers who provided for their family). Lady Macbeth begins the evil, evolving Macbeth into a wicked tyrant of cruelty.
Her constantly changing character is of interest in geology thesis act one, because she appears to be the central figure in theory essay determining the fate of King Duncan. Lady Macbeth has a strong hand in re-enforcing the report, evil that the witches initially plot into Macbeth#8217;s mind. However, it is essay Macbeth who chooses the immoral path of becoming King that can only be achieved by eliminating Duncan. He is scientific report capable of resisting the urge to choose the wrong path, yet he does otherwise. The witches have an literary essay effective influence on him which causes him to take this decision at the ending of the act. Shakespeare is never open as to how the audience should interpret the role of the witches. It is not clear if the witches are independent agents who control human lives, or agents of fate, or do their prophecies simply tell us the predictable conclusions.
Furthermore, it is not clear if Shakespeare intends for the witches to even be perceived as real or as symbolically representations of the evil that already lurks within Macbeth#8217;s heart. However, during this time people genuinely believed in witches so Shakespeare#8217;s intention must have been to create evil and to interactively let the audience develop their own character to resemble the witches, thus preparing the audience for the evil that is to come. At the beginning of Act 1, Macbeth is depicted as a courageous and valiant soldier who fights for the King without mercy. However, after he is influenced immensely by the witches and Lady Macbeth, he is no longer as innocent but a heartless and deceitful #8220;serpent#8221;. In scene two of act 1 he is aquinas cardinal portrayed as a #8220;valour#8217;s minion#8221; who #8220;carved out his passage/ Till he faced the slave#8221; (lines 19-20). King Duncan is impressed by Macbeth#8217;s qualities as he says #8220;o valiant cousin, worthy gentleman#8221;, so he positions Macbeth as a Thane of Cawdor, completely oblivious that this will lead to his disastrous death.
The fact that he becomes Thane of essay, Cawdor as the witches predicted strengthens the ambition to geology thesis, be King as Macbeth believes in the witches#8217; words. When Lady Macbeth finds out about the witches her selfish desire for ambition and her cold nature leads Macbeth astray. Macbeth is a fairly ambitious at first, but Lady Macbeth#8217;s by far exceeds his and she is prepared to stop at literary theory essay, nothing to achieve that ambition. When she attempts to persuade Macbeth to kill Duncan, he still has a conscience at this stage because he is very hesitant about killing the King, he debates with his inner self #8220;First, as I am his kinsman and his subject,#8221;, the chivalry thesis, theme of trust is especially evident in this short quotation. Macbeth sees he has a duty to protect Duncan, as his kinsman, host and also because he is a King. Literary Essay? But in the end, his weak nature and ambitious determination overcomes him. When Macbeth first talks to the witches in Act 1 we find out that he is not as noble as he is described, #8220;Speak if you can: what are you?#8221; (line 45, scene 3).
Here he is demanding and very curious. However, in Act 4 scene 1 he is essay outline eager and persistent through his speech: #8220;How know, you secret….hags! / What is#8217;t you do?#8221; (lines 46-47). At the literary theory essay, end of the Act, it is evident that Lady Macbeth has managed to convince Macbeth. The choice of language through this scene is used to show the contrasting morality of the two characters; where Lady Macbeth#8217;s evil traits are consistently battling with Macbeth#8217;s goodness nearing the end of the act. Lady Macbeth portrays this contrast where she states #8220;look like th#8217;innocent flower/ But be the serpent under#8217;t#8221;. The deeds Macbeth is about to commit prepares the audience for the darkness and evil that is about to follow. Shakespeare creates very strong imagery on Macbeth#8217;s last speech before the murder. Macbeth declares #8220;I am settled; and report sample, bend up/… false must hide what the false heart doth know.#8221; The last two lines end with a memorable rhyming couplet. The act ends with a dramatic conclusion which prepares us for what is about to happen.
Overall, there are many themes that occur through the play. Ambition plays a key role as it drives many of the theory, characters to their fate. William Shakespeare manages to capture the fine line that exists between ambition and selfish desire, which if crossed can lead to impending destruction. It can also be argued that one leads to the other. Deception is another trait present in the Act. 451 Ray? Shakespeare shows the literary essay, audience that in life things are not always as they appear (friends can turn out to be enemies). The audience is also reminded that humanity has to deal with forces of good and of commercial lease, evil in everyday life.
However, the importance of evil is prominent in Act1. I believe this act is a preparation for what is to follow as it introduces the theory, plays main theme and assignment, other genres, giving a glimpse of how ambition can lead to deception and theory, cruelty, adding up to tragedy. In effect, I feel Act 1 does a good job of portraying the invasion of evil over good, showing how Macbeth#8217;s inner desires are unleashed by chivalry thesis, the witches, Lady Macbeth and other influential events, thus preparing the audience for the thrilling battle of evil both mentally and physically. SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips. If you're reading this article, I assume you're an IB Student, who is getting ready to write their Extended Essay. If you're looking at this as a potential future IB student, I recommend reading our other introductory IB articles first: What is the International Baccalaureate (IB) Program? and What is the IB Curriculum? What are IB Diploma Requirements?. Theory Essay? IB students around the globe fear writing the Extended Essay. In this articles, I'll try to get you excited about writing your Extended Essay and essay outline provide you with the resources to get an A. I'm a recipient of an IB Diploma, and I happened to literary theory essay receive an A on my IB Extended Essay. University Geology? If you don’t believe me, the proof is in the IBO pudding,
If you're confused by what this report means, EE is short for Extended Essay, and English A1 is the subject that my Extended Essay topic coordinated with. In layman’s terms, my IB Diploma was graded during May 2010, I wrote my Extended Essay in the English A1 category, and I received a grade A. The IB Extended Essay (or EE) is literary theory, a 4,000 word structured mini-thesis that you write under the supervision of an advisor (an IB teacher at your school), which counts towards your IB Diploma (to learn about all of the IB diploma requirements, check out our other article). I'll explain exactly how the EE affects your diploma later in this article. For the of commercial lease, Extended Essay, you choose a research question as a topic; this topic needs to be approved by essay, IBO (which is not very difficult). You can do a typical research paper such as in cardinal virtues this paper, or you conduct an experiment/solve a problem such as in this paper. Most schools allow you to pick your advisor (an IB teacher preferably at your school, although you can also get access to one at another school through the Pamoja Education). I'll explain how to pick your IB EE advisor below. The IB Extended Essay must include a cover page, an abstract (one-page synopsis of your essay), a table of contents, the 4,000-word essay (which will range from 10-20 pages depending on literary essay whether your topic requires illustrations such as an experiment would), and a bibliography. Your completed Extended Essay is then sent to aquinas essay the IBO to theory essay be graded (I will go into report, more detail on grading below).
What Should You Write About in literary Your Extended Essay? You can technically write about anything, so long as the IBO approves it. University Of Texas Geology Thesis? However, you should choose a topic that falls into one of the IB Course Categories, (such as Theatre, Film, Spanish, French, Math, Biology, etc.) which shouldn’t be difficult because there are so many class subjects. Here is a range of theory, sample topics with the attached extended essay: You can see from how varied the topics are that you have a lot of freedom when it comes to picking a topic. So, how do you pick when the options are limitless? I will help you with that next: 6 Tips for Writing a Grade A Extended Essay. Tip #1: Write About Something You Enjoy Because You'll Be Spending a Lot of Time on It. I love British theatre and statement fahrenheit 451 ray ended up writing mine about essay, a revolution in post-WWII British theatre #theatrenerd.
I really encourage anyone who pursues an IB Diploma to take the fahrenheit 451 ray, Extended Essay seriously. I ended up receiving a full-tuition merit scholarship to literary USC’s School of Dramatic Arts program and in my interview for the scholarship, I spoke passionately about my Extended Essay. I genuinely think my Extended Essay helped me get my scholarship. How do you find a topic you are passionate about? Start by figuring out which classes you enjoy the most and why you enjoy them. Do you like Math because you like to aquinas virtues essay problem solve? Or do you enjoy English because you like to analyze texts? Once you have figured out theory a general subject area such as Physics, you should brainstorm more specific topics by putting pen to paper.
What was your favorite chapter you learned in that class? Was it astrophysics or mechanics? What did you like about that specific chapter? Is there something you want to learn more about? I recommend spending an hour on thesis this type of brainstorming. After doing this preliminary brainstorming make sure to choose: Tip #2: Chose a Topic That Is Not Too Broad, But Not Too Narrow. This is a fine line. You need to write about literary theory, something specific, but not so specific that you can’t write 4,000 words on it . You can’t write about WWII because that would be a book worth of material. You don’t want to write about what type of soup prisoners of war received in POW camps because you probably can’t come up with 4000 words on it. However, you could possibly write about amish essay, how the conditions in German POW camps were directly affected by essay, the Nazis successes and failures.
This may be too obvious of a topic, but you get my point. If you're really stuck trying to find a not too broad or narrow topic, I recommend trying to brainstorm a topic that uses a comparison. University Of Texas Geology Thesis? If you refer back to the topics I mentioned above, you may notice that two use comparisons. I also used comparison in theory essay my EE, comparing Harold Pinter's Party Time to John Osborne's Look Back in Anger in order to show a transition in British Theatre. Topics with comparisons of 2-3 plays/books/diets/etc. tend to thesis statement fahrenheit 451 ray bradbury be in the sweet spot of theory, not too narrow or broad because you can analyze each portion and after doing in-depth analysis on each, you compare and chivalry thesis explain the literary essay, significance of the lease, comparison. The key here is that the comparison needs to be significant. I compared two plays to literary theory show a transition in British Theatre. Comparisons are not the only way to aquinas cardinal virtues get a grade A EE. If after brainstorming, you pick a non-comparison based topic and literary you are still unsure if a topic is too broad or narrow, spend 30 minutes doing some basic research and see how much material is thesis, out there.
If there are over 1,000 books/articles/documentaries out there on literary theory essay the exact topic, it may be too broad. If there are only 2 books that have any connection to your topic, it may be too narrow. If you are still unsure, ask your advisor! Speaking of advisors: Tip #3: Choose an Advisor Who Is Very Familiar With Your Topic and Who Seems Excited About It. If you are not certain of scientific, who you would like to be your advisor, I would start by creating a list of your top three choices. Next, create a list of literary essay, pros and cons (I know this sounds tedious, but it really helps!). For example, Mr. Green is my favorite teacher, and amish essay outline we get along really well, but he teaches English, and I want to conduct an literary, experiment to compare the efficiency of American Hybrid Cars to Foreign Hybrid Cars. Ms. White teaches Physics, I had her a year ago, and assignment she liked me.
She could help me design my experiment. Theory? I am going to ask Ms. White! Do NOT just ask your favorite teacher to be your advisor. Chivalry Thesis? They may be a hindrance to you if they teach another subject. Theory? I would not suggest asking your Biology teacher to guide you in writing your English EE.
EXCEPTION: If you have a teacher who is passionate and knowledgeable about your topic (as my English teacher was about my Theatre topic), you can ask that instructor. Consider all of your options first before you do. There was no theatre teacher at my school, so I could not find a theatre-specific advisor, so I chose the scientific report, next best thing. Some IB high schools require your IB Extended Essay advisor to literary sign an Agreement Form. Make sure you ask your IB coordinator if there is any required paperwork. Cardinal Virtues Essay? IBO does not require any paperwork. If your school needs a Form signed, make sure you bring it with you when you ask a teacher to literary theory essay be your EE advisor. Tip #4: Choose an Advisor Who Will Push You to Be Your Best.
Some teachers may just take on students because they have to and may not be passionate about reading drafts and may not give you a lot of thesis statement fahrenheit bradbury, feedback. Choose a teacher who will take the time to read several drafts and give you extensive notes. I would not have gotten my A without being pushed to theory make the draft better. Ask a teacher that you have experience with either through class directly or through an geology, extracurricular activity. Do not ask a teacher that you have no connection to; a teacher, who does not know you, is unlikely to push you. Note: The IBO only allows advisors to suggest improvements to literary theory essay the EE, but they may not be engaged in writing the EE. The IBO recommends that the supervisor spends approximately two to thesis statement three hours in total with the literary theory, candidate discussing the assignment, EE. Tip #5: Make Sure Your Essay Has a Clear Structure and Flow. IB likes structure.
Your EE needs a clear introduction (which should be 1-2 pages double-spaced), research question/focus (i.e. what you will be investigating), body, and conclusion (about 1 page double-spaced). Theory Essay? An essay that has unclear or poor organization will be graded poorly. Also, make sure your 300-word abstract is clear and briefly summarizes your whole argument. Thesis Fahrenheit? An ambiguous abstract will make it more challenging for the reader to follow your essay’s argument and will also hurt the grading of your EE. The body of your EE should make up the bulk of the essay. It should be about 8-18 pages double-spaced (again just depending on whether or not you include diagrams).
Your body can be split into literary, multiple parts. Essay? For example, if you are doing a comparison, you might have 1/3 of your body as Novel A Analysis, 1/3 as Novel B Analysis, and theory essay the last 1/3 as Comparison of Novel A and B Analysis. If you are conducting an essay, experiment or analyzing data such as in this EE , your EE body will have a clear and obvious parts following the scientific method: stating the research question, discussing your method, showing the literary theory, data, analyzing the data, discussing uncertainties, and drawing a conclusion/evaluating the geology thesis, experiment. Tip #6: Start Writing Sooner Rather Than Later! You will not be able to crank out a 4,000-word essay in a week and literary get an A. Thesis Statement 451 Ray? You will be reading many, many articles (and, depending on literary essay your topic, possibly books, plays, and watching movies). Start the research possible as soon as possible. Each school has a slightly different deadline for the Extended Essay. Some schools want them as soon as November of your Senior Year; others will take them as later as February of Senior Year. Your school will give you your deadline; if they haven't mentioned it by February of Junior year, ask your IB coordinator. Some schools will give you a timeline of when you need to come up with a topic, when you need to meet with your advisor and when certain drafts are due. Not all schools do.
Ask your IB coordinator if you are unsure if you are on a specific timeline. Here is my recommended timeline, it is earlier than most schools, but it will save you so much heartache (trust me, I remember): January/February of assignment of commercial, Junior Year: Come up with your final research topic (or at least top 3). February of theory essay, Junior Year: Approach a teacher about being your EE advisor (if he or she says no, keep asking others until you find one - see my notes above on how to pick an EE advisor). April/May of Junior Year: Submit an essay outline, outline of your EE and literary a bibliography of of commercial, potential research sources (I recommend at literary theory, least 7-10) to your EE advisor. Meet with your EE advisor to discuss your outline. Summer between Junior and Senior Year: Complete your first full draft over virtues essay the summer between Junior and Senior Year! I know, I know no one wants to work during the summer, but trust me this will save you so much stress come the fall when you are busy with college applications and theory essay other IB internal assessments for your IB classes.
You will want to have this first full draft done because you will want to complete a couple of draft cycles as you likely won’t be able to get everything you want to say into university geology, 4000 articulate words the first time. Try to literary essay get this first draft into the best possible shape you can, so that you do not have to work on statement fahrenheit bradbury too many revisions during the school year on top of your homework/college applications/work/extracurriculars/etc. August/September of theory, Senior Year: Turn in of commercial your first draft of your EE to your advisor and receive feedback. Work on theory essay incorporating their feedback into your essay. If they have a lot of suggestions for improvement, ask if they will read one more draft before the final draft. September/October of assignment lease, Senior Year: Submit second draft of EE to your advisor (if necessary) and receive their feedback. Work on creating the literary, best possible final draft. November-February of Senior Year: Submit two copies of your final draft to your school to be sent off to thesis 451 ray bradbury IBO. You likely will not get your grade until after you graduate. The early bird DOES get the worm!
Extended essays are marked by external assessors (examiners appointed by the IB) on a scale of theory essay, 0 to 36. There are general and subject-specific criteria, at amish essay outline, a ratio of 2:1 (24 possible marks for the general criteria and 12 marks for the subject-specific one). The total mark is converted into a grade from A to E, using the below parameters: Here is the typical breakdown of literary, scores (from 2008): How Does the Extended Essay Grade Affect Your IB Diploma? The Extended Essay grade is combined with your TOK (Theory of Knowledge) grade to determine how many points you get towards your IB Diploma. To learn about Theory of Knowledge or how many points you need to receive your IB Diploma, read our other articles on What is the International Baccalaureate (IB) Program? or IB Diploma Requirements.
